And we do need now to ask you again to contribute. The coming weeks and months will be critical in our surge to slow down the rush to environmental disaster threatened by the expansion of natural gas drilling into our lovely, near pristine region along the upper Delaware which also happens to be the watershed for 15 million people and probably includes you, too. The safety of the drinking water supply of the Northeast is at stake. DCS has been hugely successful in alerting public officials, media editors and environmentally concerned citizens like you to the dangers we face together. Your contributions have kept our volunteer network outreach humming. Now we are beyond the public education phase of our volunteer activism and are transitioning into a more costly time of influencing lawmakers and regulators and launching court challenges. This requires paid professionals and more intensive fundraising. The other side has complained about how organized and effective we are. They haven't seen anything yet!
Our efforts have advanced our agenda and spread the word beyond our expectations. We have taken control of the message and the tide is turning in our favor. State agencies can no longer ignore the facts. Federal regulators and lawmakers are stepping up to the job of restoring the protections that existed before the notorious 2005 Energy Policy Act removed all federal air and water protections from gas industry responsibility. DCS is leading the charge and has taken on the role of legal pit bull in plans for future court actions. We have environmental attorneys and water safety advisers on retainer and we are ready to lunge. This will immediately require substantial increases in expenses. DCS members donate countless hours as activists and community organizers. None of us draws a salary but we have to pay the pros.
This will be one of the most effective contributions you will ever make to a cause that will save lives and avert disease. Coming to the party will make that act of giving even more of a pleasure. You can schmooze with the dedicated members who have been shouldering the burden of work while enjoying live music, informative presentations. and delicious food and libations. Bring your checkbook and kindly donate at least $100. per person, hopefully more. We promise that you will not think that amount too much when you realize how far we have come to saving your water from future contamination. Donating now will make the biggest difference in our push to withstand the efforts of the energy industry to silence us. After all, we will all have to pay, one way or the other. We should know by now that stopping pollution is much less expensive than trying to clean it up after we have let it occur.
